TECNO Atom Concept Could Reinvent Smartphones with Magnetic Modular Design

For years, smartphone innovation has focused on faster processors, brighter displays, and better cameras. But one thing has remained unchanged: once you buy a phone, its hardware is fixed.

TECNO believes that may not always be the case.

At Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026, the company introduced Atom, a concept smartphone designed around a modular ecosystem where users can attach and remove hardware components whenever they need them. Rather than carrying a bulky phone every day, users could customize it with additional cameras, battery packs, or other accessories only when required.

An Ultra-Thin Phone That Grows with Your Needs

The base version of the TECNO Atom measures just 4.9mm thick, making it one of the thinnest smartphone concepts ever showcased.

Instead of increasing the phone’s permanent thickness to accommodate larger batteries or advanced cameras, TECNO separates those features into magnetic modules that can be attached when needed.

For example, a slim magnetic battery pack can instantly extend battery life, while detachable camera accessories can transform the device into a more capable photography tool without affecting its everyday portability.

How the Modular System Works

TECNO’s concept relies on what it calls Modular Magnetic Interconnection Technology.

Accessories snap securely onto the rear of the phone using precision magnetic alignment. Power is supplied through pogo-pin connectors, while high-speed wireless technologies—including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and millimeter-wave communication—handle data transfer between the phone and attached modules.

This hybrid approach allows accessories to function almost instantly without requiring complex wired connections.

The First Wave of Magnetic Accessories

TECNO has outlined an ecosystem of approximately 10 interchangeable modules.

Among the concepts already demonstrated are:

  • A 4.5mm ultra-thin magnetic power bank that significantly extends battery life.
  • A telephoto camera module designed for advanced zoom photography.
  • A detachable action camera for capturing creative angles and outdoor content.

The company also suggests future modules could include dedicated AI processors, additional storage, health accessories, and productivity-focused hardware.

Why Modular Phones Failed Before

The idea of modular smartphones isn’t new.

Companies including Google, Motorola, and LG previously experimented with interchangeable phone components. While these products generated excitement, they struggled because of limited accessory ecosystems, higher costs, bulky designs, and inconsistent user adoption.

TECNO’s concept attempts to solve many of those earlier limitations by combining ultra-thin hardware, magnetic attachment, and wireless communication that eliminates bulky connectors.

Whether these improvements are enough to make modular smartphones commercially successful remains to be seen.

AI Is Driving a New Generation of Hardware

The concept also reflects how artificial intelligence is changing smartphone design.

Instead of simply making phones more powerful every year, manufacturers are exploring ways to let users expand their devices based on AI workloads.

Future AI-focused modules could provide additional processing power for on-device generative AI, faster image editing, advanced language models, or specialized enterprise applications without requiring users to replace their entire smartphone.

This modular approach could also help reduce electronic waste by allowing individual hardware components to be upgraded independently.

A Glimpse Into the Future of Smartphones

TECNO has made it clear that Atom is currently a concept device, not a commercial product.

However, concept phones often serve as testing grounds for technologies that later appear in mainstream devices. Features such as foldable displays, under-display cameras, and satellite connectivity all began as experimental concepts before reaching consumers.

If modular ecosystems become practical, future smartphones may no longer be defined by fixed specifications. Instead, users could build devices tailored specifically for photography, gaming, travel, business, or AI productivity.

TECNO’s Atom concept suggests that the next evolution of smartphones may not be about making one device do everything—it may be about allowing users to create the device they need, whenever they need it.
