Apple iPhone Duo Launches as Its First Foldable Phone at ₹2,99,900 in India

Apple has finally entered the foldable smartphone market, but it has done so in a typically Apple way: with a premium design, a new product identity and a price that places it firmly in the luxury smartphone category.

At its September 9, 2026 launch event, Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone. The device uses a passport-style, book-like folding design and opens into the largest display ever fitted to an iPhone. In India, the iPhone Duo starts at ₹2,99,900, making it one of the most expensive mainstream smartphones available in the country.

Apple has confirmed that pre-orders in India will begin at 5:30 PM IST on October 16, while retail availability will start on October 23, 2026.

iPhone Duo Brings a Passport-Style Folding Design

Unlike clamshell foldables that become smaller when folded, the iPhone Duo follows a book-style format.

When closed, the phone features a 5.4-inch outer display designed for everyday use, messaging, calls and quick interactions. When opened, it reveals a 7.6-inch inner display, giving users a much larger workspace without carrying a separate tablet.

Apple says the outer screen offers approximately 90% of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro, while the unfolded display is around 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Both screens use the same aspect ratio to make content transition more naturally between the folded and unfolded states.

The overall design is intended to resemble the size and proportions of a passport when closed, making it noticeably different from conventional rectangular smartphones.

A Foldable Display Built Around Continuity

Apple is placing considerable emphasis on the transition between the two screens.

The inner display uses a special nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare and reflections while also making the fold area less visually noticeable. Both displays support ProMotion, Always-On functionality and peak outdoor brightness of up to 3,000 nits.

The company has also redesigned iOS 27 to adapt to different positions and orientations. Users can run two applications side by side, use a wider keyboard in landscape mode, watch content while browsing another application and place the phone at different angles for hands-free viewing.

Apple says the device can be used in multiple configurations, including fully closed, partially opened, landscape, portrait and standing positions.

Titanium Construction and a Precision Hinge

The iPhone Duo is built using a Grade 5 titanium frame and hinge cover, along with Ceramic Shield protection on the front and back. Apple has also given the device an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.

The hinge is one of the most important components in any foldable phone because it must withstand repeated opening and closing while maintaining screen alignment and structural stability.

Apple has not positioned the Duo as a conventional foldable with a visibly mechanical appearance. Instead, the company is presenting the hinge as a precision-engineered component designed to make the folding action feel smooth and durable.

A20 Pro Chip and Dual-Battery Architecture

The iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, the same processor family used in the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.

Because foldable phones have less internal space and must manage heat across a thin, flexible body, thermal engineering is particularly important. Apple says the Duo uses a custom vapour chamber for thermal management and a dual-battery architecture to deliver all-day battery performance.

The dual-battery arrangement is designed to distribute power across the two halves of the phone while helping Apple manage the constraints created by the folding mechanism and thin chassis.

Camera Features Designed Specifically for a Foldable

The iPhone Duo features a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system, but Apple is focusing less on simply increasing camera count and more on how the folding structure changes photography.

The outer display can act as a preview screen when users take selfies using the higher-resolution rear cameras. This allows people to frame themselves while using the main camera system rather than relying only on an internal front-facing camera.

Apple has also introduced features such as Smart Take, which uses on-device intelligence to detect when people are ready for a photograph, and Duo Preview, which allows subjects to see the framing before the image is captured.

The phone can also be positioned on a surface at different angles, reducing the need for a tripod in certain photography and video situations.

Apple Pencil Support Is Coming

The larger internal display also gives the iPhone Duo a more tablet-like purpose.

Apple says the device will support the USB-C Apple Pencil later in 2026, allowing users to take notes, sketch, annotate documents and mark up content on either display.

This is an important shift in how Apple is positioning the product. The Duo is not merely being marketed as a phone that folds smaller. It is being presented as a hybrid device that can move between smartphone use and compact tablet-style productivity.

iPhone Duo India Price Starts at ₹2,99,900

The iPhone Duo starts at ₹2,99,900 in India for the 256GB model. The top-end 2TB version is priced at ₹4,44,900.

The US starting price is $1,999, which initially makes the Indian price appear significantly higher. However, the comparison becomes more complicated after accounting for taxes and import duties.

The device is currently being imported into India as a completely built unit rather than being locally manufactured. Industry analysts cited by The Economic Times estimate that the Indian price includes 18% GST and an import-related cost structure that makes the first-generation foldable more expensive in the country.

The pricing could change in future generations if Apple eventually shifts some foldable production to India.

Why the Indian Price Is So High

Apple has significantly expanded iPhone manufacturing in India, but foldable devices require a different production process from conventional smartphones.

Foldable displays, precision hinges, flexible internal components and structural testing require specialised manufacturing capabilities. Establishing a local supply chain for such a product can take time.

The Economic Times reported that once local manufacturing becomes possible, future generations of the iPhone Duo could see a narrower price gap between India and the United States.

For now, Indian buyers are paying a premium not only for Apple’s branding but also for the cost of introducing a completely new product category into the company’s manufacturing and distribution network.

Apple Enters a Market It Did Not Create

Apple is late to the foldable smartphone market.

Companies such as Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi and several other manufacturers have already released multiple generations of foldable devices. Apple, however, has entered only after the technology, hinge mechanisms and display manufacturing processes have matured considerably.

That delay may be deliberate.

Apple generally waits until a product category has developed enough for it to deliver a tightly integrated experience rather than being the first company to introduce an experimental design.

The iPhone Duo combines Apple’s hardware, software, chip design, camera processing and ecosystem advantages into a single foldable product. The company’s strategy is not simply to compete on screen size but to make the foldable format feel like a natural extension of the iPhone experience.

The Bigger Question Is Whether Users Need a Foldable iPhone

At nearly ₹3 lakh, the iPhone Duo is not aimed at the mass smartphone market.

Its appeal will likely centre on users who want a large display but do not want to carry both a phone and a tablet. Professionals may find the split-screen experience useful for email, documents, research and multitasking, while premium consumers may be attracted by the novelty and exclusivity of Apple’s first foldable device.

However, foldables still involve compromises. They are more complex than conventional smartphones, and the long-term durability of hinges and flexible displays remains a major consideration for buyers.

Apple’s reputation for hardware reliability may help convince consumers who have been cautious about buying foldable phones from other brands.

A Major Design Shift for the iPhone

The iPhone Duo represents the most significant physical redesign of the iPhone in years.

The product introduces a new form factor, a larger screen that fits into a pocket, a redesigned operating system experience and camera functions built around the folding structure.

Whether it becomes a major commercial success will depend on more than specifications. Apple will need to prove that the device is durable, useful and worth the substantial premium over the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

But the launch itself is strategically important.

With the iPhone Duo, Apple has officially moved foldable smartphones from an emerging niche into the centre of its flagship product strategy. The next phase of the foldable market will now be shaped not only by display innovation, but also by how Apple convinces its enormous global user base that a phone can be both compact and tablet-sized at the same time.
